What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica refers to pain caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the body. The sciatic nerve originates in the lower spine and travels through the hips, buttocks, and down each leg.

When the nerve becomes irritated, symptoms can include:

  • Pain radiating from the low back into the buttock and leg

  • Burning or shooting pain

  • Numbness or tingling

  • Muscle weakness

  • Increased pain with sitting, bending, or prolonged standing

Sciatica can range from mild discomfort to severe pain that interferes with work, exercise, and daily activities.

Common Causes of Sciatica

Several conditions can irritate the sciatic nerve, including:

  • Herniated or bulging discs

  • Degenerative disc disease

  • Spinal stenosis

  • Joint dysfunction in the lower back

  • Muscle tightness or irritation

  • Poor posture and prolonged sitting

  • Sports injuries and repetitive strain

Because multiple conditions can cause sciatica, an accurate evaluation is essential for successful treatment.

How Physical Therapy Helps Sciatica

At Active Spine Physical Therapy, we focus on finding the true source of your symptoms—not simply treating the pain.

Your personalized treatment plan may include:

Manual Therapy

Hands-on techniques can help restore mobility, reduce stiffness, and decrease irritation around the affected nerve.

Targeted Exercises

Specific exercises are prescribed to improve flexibility, strengthen supporting muscles, and reduce pressure on sensitive structures.

Movement Assessment

We identify movement patterns, postures, and daily habits that may be contributing to your symptoms.

Core Strengthening

Improved core stability can help support the spine and reduce stress on the lower back.

Treatments including Lumbar Traction, Dry needling, Kinesiology Taping

Following assessment of your sciatica, our therapists may apply one or more of these treatments.
